Projected Keyboards

August 23rd, 2009 Comments off

Many people who travel a lot want to have access to the Internet and to their computer at all times. Generally speaking, the opinion of people is that laptops are the best solution in this case, because they do not weight a lot and they have rechargeable batteries. However, laptops are not the only solution. As a matter of fact, Personal Data Assistants (PDA) have many useful features. The best thing about them is that they weight very little and take little space. Some might argue that since PDAs lack a keyboard, it would not be efficient to type on them. What if I told you that you could use a projected keyboard? There are many devices like this, and most of them require wireless Bluetooth technology. Basically, such projected keyboards can be connected to a PDA, or even a regular computer. These keyboards have even simulated key click sounds and the typing speed can be comparable to regular keyboards. Of course, it might take some time to get used to a projected keyboard, but once that is done the typing speed can be really fast. I believe that projected keyboards make PDAs a perfect device for those who travel a lot.

Soft Bodied Robots

August 20th, 2009 Comments off

In the Terminator trilogy there was a robot that was composed out of some kind of metal. This robot was able to change shape, and even squeeze through tight holes. Currently researchers are working on a soft bodied robot that would be able to maneuver through openings smaller than its dimensions. Such robots could be used to a variety of missions, such as bomb disposal or other dangerous tasks. The robot that I read about is very small, about the size of a softball, and is still being developed. It would be great to have robots replace doing dangerous tasks, and I think that in the future even soldiers will be gradually replaced by machines.

Are Your Mobile Devices Safe?

August 14th, 2009 Comments off

A recent study shows that there are a lot of malicious-code attacks being aimed at mobile devices. Such malware is often hidden within legitimate applications, which makes it hard to detect. There are different consequences of being infected with malicious programs, including the fact that malware can compromise information on your device. Backing up important data from your mobile devices might be a good precaution, because there might be circumstances that you will not be able to predict. You should take into account that programs like Google Earth, or other popular software and games can contain malware. This is a relatively new occurrence when it comes to mobile devices, because even thought such tactics were utilized by creators of PC malware, only recently mobile devices became in danger as well.

Internet to Reach Full Capacity by 2012?

August 9th, 2009 Comments off

The number of Internet users is constantly growing and little thought has been given to the potential capacity of the Internet network. There has been a lot of speculation that the current Internet architecture will reach the limits of its capacity by 2012. It has been stated that Internet may not be able to cope with the increasing amounts of video content on the Internet. Videos amount to 40% of today’s traffic, but by 2012 it is estimated that it will be a lot higher number. To remedy the situation, a lot of money is needed to invest in a new infrastructure. While many Internet users are worried about the current situation, I think that as long as companies invest money in to maintain their network, there should not be any problems.

Gesture Controlled Robots

August 8th, 2009 Comments off

Some time ago a Tokyo University engineer has developed a very original way to control robots by using simple gestures. This robot is supposed to have cameras that would detect body movements and later translate these actions into movements. Such discovery would allow a user to control something like the direction of a robot by pointing which way they would like it to go. What I find appealing with this way of controlling a robot is that gesture movements are a perfectly natural thing to do for a human being, contrary to using a keyboard or other input devices. We see more and more inventions being made that are making the communication gap between humans and robots smaller and smaller. What do you think about it?
