Hacked Microprocessors

August 26th, 2010

Generally speaking, hackers try to take control of a computer by infecting a computer with malicious software. However, it appears that there is another way that hackers might want to get access to our computers, namely, by hacking microprocessors. Last year researchers from the University of Illinois altered a computer chip to grant attackers back-door access to a computer. If hackers would decide to do this, detecting what is wrong with the computer would be virtually impossible. The way it technically works is that malicious firmware would be injected into the chip’s memory that would allow the attacker to log into the machine as if he were a legitimate user. For this type of attack to work, the hacker or his associates would have to get physical access to the processor which fortunately is unlikely. However, the possibility still exists, and it is quite scary that any one of us could be using such hardware.

Of course, it is a lot easier to defend from software threats such as viruses and spyware. In order to be well protected you should be simply using a safe browser, and have an up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware program. Firefox is generally considered to be the safest browser so keep that in mind.

Search Engine Optimization

August 18th, 2010

From my experience I can say that some businesses know how to advertise on the Internet, while some of them do not have any idea how to do it and they never succeed. If, for example, a plastic surgeon offers quality services, it is in his best interest to make sure that he knows ways to advertise on the Net. When I think of Plastic Surgery SEO, I think of many useful tools that every plastic surgery owner can use to create his own website and market it the way it should be advertised to attract as many customers to his practice as it is possible.

Site Validation

August 5th, 2010

Performing website validation ensures that your website is working without any problems or errors. Having a website that has various errors is risky. That is because browsers will try to repair the error, but since there are different browsers, each of them will do it in a different way. This in turn can result in some serious problems with your site. It is a shame that there is no standard when it comes to browsers. Until there will be more cooperation between the companies that create the most popular browsers, such errors will be especially dangerous. Nonetheless, there are tools which can help you spot such mistakes:

1. A good tool for validating your HTML or XHTML is http://validator.w3.org/
2. For validating your CSS use http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
3. To make sure your readers do not have problems receiving feeds use http://feedvalidator.org/
One advice that I would like to give you here is to stick to the most popular browsers like Internet Explorer. I know that other browsers might seem to be more suitable to you, but I think that it is still too early to try to be original and have a browser that nobody else has. Most of the people in the world use Internet Explorer anyway, so try to stick with it as well for as long as it is possible.

Robots Patrolling Streets

August 4th, 2010

Will we reach a point in time that robots will be patrolling the streets, as security officers? The truth is that such robots already exist, as a homemade robot is patrolling an American neighborhood after dark. The robot is operated by an ex-marine who believes that the robot restores peace and increases security. He claims that no break-ins had been reported and that the park across the street feels safer. Other people claim that the robot exploits the kind of anxiety that underlies the Terminator movies, as many people are scared by this bot. The design of the bot itself is very interesting, as it is remotely controlled by the ex-marine, and the robot’s loudspeaker can be used to communicate with people. I think that utilizing robots in such fashion is a good idea, especially once people will get more used to robots. Robots should be used to perform tasks that are dangerous to humans. Patrolling streets at dark may be one way robots will be used.

Getting One Way Links

August 1st, 2010

It is important to have links pointing to your site from other people’s blogs. Such links will not only contribute to higher Page Rank, but can also bring a lot of targeted traffic. There are at least a few ways you can try to obtain such links. Your site will benefit from them, so here is what you can do:

-Submit your blog to as many directories as possible.
-Submit your articles to free article directories.

The process of submitting your blog and articles can and will be time consuming. However, there is a solution to this problem. You can purchase the appropriate software that will do it for you automatically. This will cost you some money, but if you are dedicated to blogging it will not be a problem. Additionally, if your blog generates some money, your investment will surely not be wasted. It will still take you some time to register in order to submit your articles, but you will only have to do it once. The same applies to web directory submission. Many programs already have directories listed in their database for your convenience. I know there are many webmasters taking advantage out of such software, and they claim that it is worth it.

Social Media Sites

July 27th, 2010

I know many people that keep regularly visiting social media sites. They do so because it allows them to keep in touch with their friends and meet new people. These days social media sites are quite comprehensive and contain various features. All of these features make it very fun to keep visiting these sites. Companies might also want to have an online presence on such sites and a Social Media Agency might be able to help with that. There are millions of people who visit such sites so no wonder that there is such a big buzz around them recently.

What Accent Do You Have?

July 25th, 2010

As a blog author and web publisher my accent is obviously not that important, since I spread my thoughts in a written format. Even though my accent might not be that important, I think that some of you would be interested in what way do I speak. Having this in mind, I took the ‘What American Accent Do You Have’ quiz in order to see for myself. The result of the quiz was that I have the Midland accent, which actually is another way of saying that I do not have any specific accent. So, if you are wondering in what way I speak, then try to imagine someone from Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri or maybe someone from Florida or Charleston, as I speak in a similar way they do. You can take the quiz by visiting http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have.

Images and WordPress

July 23rd, 2010

If you are a blogger having a WordPress blog, you may want to insert a picture in your post from time to time. You might want to do that in order to make your blog more attractive to visitors. It might happen that some of your friends will send you an image that they will ask you to post on your blog. However, sometimes you might be surprised that the image is so big that it does not fit very well in your post. You should remember that you can always resize an image. To do so, go to your draft and left click on this picture once. You will see that it is surrounded by black frame with a few black dots. Move your cursor on one of those dots and wait until your cursor changes into double headed arrow. If it does, then hold left mouse button and drag it in order to make it smaller. Integrating images is a great idea, but try to remember not to make them too big. Another important thing that you should remember is to make sure your blog loads within a few seconds. In other words, do not upload too many images, or those visitors that use dial-up will have a hard time browsing your site. Images can make your blog look better, but you also have to take into account the loading time of your blog. There are some websites on the Internet that can help you measure that.

Why You Should Back Up Your Data

July 22nd, 2010

It seems obvious that each computer user should back up all important data on his PC. The question is whether people really protect their computers from data loss. Here are some of the reasons why you might want to consider backing up data to be a part of your regular routine:

1. You can lose your data anytime due to even a single virus on your PC.
2. Power failure and hard disk problems might also contribute to significant data loss.
3. Do not assume that computers nowadays are secure. This false sense of security can be the reason you might lose important data.
4. You should back up all valuable data so that you will not have to worry about losing it. You will be able to sleep peacefully knowing that your valuable data is safe.

If you decide to back up your data, then you should consider using an external hard drive for this purpose. Make sure you store it in a safe place so that no one will be able to get hold of it. If you are wondering how often you should back up, I am going to say that there is no magical number. Once per month is generally considered to be a good idea, but if you want to be on the safe side you may want to back up every week. Some decide to make a back up on a daily basis, but it actually might be quite excessive, so in the end it is your choice.

Mac vs. PC

July 21st, 2010

Computers are generally divided into two categories, namely PCs and Macs. Some people love Mac, but as an avid computer user myself, I discourage people from buying a Mac. I have listed some reasons below:

• First of all, Mac is being sold only in a handful of countries. If you are an American, and let us say that you will stay in Europe for a year or two, do not be surprised if you are going to be one of the only people with a Mac. If you have an international mindset, you might be surprised that in many countries people did not even hear about Macs and there is no support for them whatsoever.
• The most popular software does not work on Mac. If you have been a PC user for many years, why would you want to abandon using all of the programs that you know so well?
• When it comes to software, it might be very difficult to operate as a business or a professional without having access to MS Office at home. Office is pretty much the standard in the business world.

Even if Macs were a few more percent more efficient in comparison to PCs, it does not really matter, because they are not popular enough in the world to justify buying them.
