Thermal Paste

March 12th, 2010

Thermal paste is very important when it comes to computers, because it protects the CPU from overheating. It is important to apply thermal paste to the CPU before you attach a heatsink to it. If for some reason you decide not to use thermal paste, then you risk permanently damaging your CPU. There are some basic rules on how to apply a paste and usually they should be described on the package of the thermal paste that you purchased. If no instructions are included, then you should simply try to apply a thin layer of thermal paste to your CPU. Just gently apply the paste on the top of the CPU remembering that the layer should be thin and not too thick. What computer users will consider as good news is the fact that actually many heatsinks already come with a layer of thermal paste attached to it. In such a case, you might no longer have to worry about buying additional paste. Of course, after a few years there might be a need to reapply it. Some technicians recommend that you apply thermal paste each year if you have the opportunity to do so. The CPU is the most expensive component of most computers, which is why we should take special care of it.
Another thing that you should remember is that while there are different brands of thermal pastes, even the least expensive ones should be sufficient enough. There is no need to buy the most expensive thermal paste if you can avoid it.
