Adware and Spyware

May 28th, 2010 Comments off

Both adware and spyware are unwanted programs that act without your consent on your computer. It is not easy to uninstall them, as they are not on the list of programs you have installed on your PC. You will not be able to simply go to the control panel in Windows and uninstall them.
Now let us talk about the differences between spyware and adware. Spyware is a type of software that detects what you do in your computer. For example, it can detect what you type when you insert your bank account password. Very often it will also track the website you visit. You have to admit that having spyware on your PC can be quite dangerous. Even the simplest spyware can violate your privacy, but some types of spyware can be even responsible for stealing your credit card information. That is why if you suspect your computer is infected you should take some steps to remove the malware.

On the other hand, an adware is a software that will display automatically, without your consent, various ads that you might have on your hard disk. Generally, adware is less dangerous to you and your computer than spyware. However, adware can slow down your PC, especially if you have a slow Internet connection to begin with. It will also use your Internet connection bandwidth without informing you at all. Another problem with adware is that it often displays random ads, and some of them can be considered offensive, especially if you have small children sitting near your computer.

Giving Advice

May 27th, 2010 Comments off

Are you considered by your friends as a person who gives good advice? Now it is possible to make money from it. There are sites like Daytipper dot com which pay $3 for each original tip you submit. Three dollars might not be a lot, but if you have many tips you can offer, then who knows, maybe you will become the top contributor. As I stated the tips should be original, submitting tips that were already submitted, or which the staff does not like will result in you not getting paid. This is the part that I do not like, because it seems unfair you would sacrifice your own time writing something, and in the end not getting paid. The problem is that the webmaster has to judge which tip is original or not. The reason I do not like it is because the webmaster might be sometimes biased. Having said that, I still think it might be a good idea to check out the site, especially if you are going to take the time to read some other tips, in order to decide whether a particular tip you wish to submit will be original enough. Of course, apart from earning some extra cash, such websites are also a great place for some social interactions. I imagine that there are many useful tips posted from which you could benefit. Since such sites are usually free, I am tempted myself to start reading the tips posted there.

Is Google Producing Content?

May 26th, 2010 Comments off

Like some of you might remember, Google has been already sued by some companies in the past. One of the recent ones was Viacom that sued this giant for $1 billion claiming that their material is showing on YouTube without any authorization. In fact, many companies including book publishers and TV producers fear that Google is going to try to become a huge media business that produces content, and thus is going to compete with them. Many media companies claim that Google built its fortune by taking the content produced by other corporations and publishing it on the Internet. According to Google itself, the fear that many companies have is not well grounded. The giant is not planning at all to threat the publishing and TV units by becoming a content producing business. What do you think about it?

Google is most famous for its revolutionary search engine. Millions of people use Google’s search engine as it offers accurate results and does not cost anything to use. What Google’s search engine does is that it displays results from all over the Web. In this sense Google is not producing any content, but rather focuses on on allowing people to find content produced by other businesses and people.

Floppy Drives

May 25th, 2010 Comments off

These days, floppy disk drives are quite obsolete, and most computers do not have them. However, floppy disk drives can sometimes be useful, for example, in case of running a data erasing program on your HDD. If you have more than one PC, it may not make any sense to buy a floppy disk drive for each one, but instead, you might want to consider a USB floppy drive. This way you can connect it to any computer you want, and the USB floppy drives are usually more reliable compared to the regular ones. Having said that, I also feel that you should be aware of the limitations of floppy disks. First of all, they contain only 1.44MB of data, which means that one CD is an equivalent of around 500 floppy disks. Another problem is that floppy disks are not very durable or reliable. Overall, it is safe to assume that within a matter of years floppy drives will be a very rare sight. However, it is interesting that there are still some people who are using them, as they simply got used to them. It is not that easy to break old habits and that is one of the reasons floppy drives are not obsolete yet.

Speed up Boot Times

May 22nd, 2010 Comments off

No one likes wasting time while waiting for his computer to boot. That is why it might be a good idea to take some measures in order to speed up the boot time.

First of all, it is important to understand that each time your computer is loading, it is actually loading all of the programs that are set to run at startup. Secondly, my observation is that usually people who complain about load boot time have many unnecessary programs that set themselves to start each time your computer is loading. You might not see them, because most of them run in the background, but trust me that an average computer has often more than a dozen programs that load at start-up.

All you have to do in order to speed up the boot time is disable some programs to load at start-up by going to Start -> Run-> typing msconfig-> Startup and unselecting non-crucial applications. Make sure you do not turn off any program you may actually want to run at start-up. Important programs like that include firewalls, antivirus software, spyware detectors, or any program you use on a regular basis. On the other hand, try switching off programs that you rarely use.

Input Devices and Games

May 22nd, 2010 Comments off

Some people argue that every keyboard is a great peripheral for gaming. While that might be true, some keyboards are simply better for gaming than others. The same is true about mouses. I think that the middle button is very useful in many situations, and I know that some of the mouses do not have one. From my experience, I can say that a laser mouse can be better for gaming as they are very reliable. If you use a roller ball mouse, it might stop working at any moment due to dirt being accumulated. It might happen when it could be a disaster for it to stop working, like during a tournament. Many gamers use mouse of reputable companies like Logitech or Microsoft, and are very happy with their precision and overall performance. Do not forget to make sure you have a reliable mouse pad as well. A high quality mouse pad will ensure that your gaming experience will be more enjoyable.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of gamers you are playing. First Person Shooters require a very precise mouse, while almost any mouse will be suitable for role-playing games. Some gamers spend a lot of money on various peripherals, but before you do so, I suggest that you make sure you really need them. Most gamers will not need to buy expensive peripherals. Make sure that you are not buying some expensive mouse or keyboard only to show off.

Choosing the Right Password

May 19th, 2010 Comments off

Passwords are used to protect all of our accounts on the Internet. You can protect your email, MySpace, gaming, blog, forum, and subscription site account among others. That is why choosing a proper password is important, but unfortunately sometimes people are not very creative when it comes to choosing a password. It appears that one of the most popular passwords is “password”. Another popular one is “qwerty” and another famous one is 123456. As you see, they are not very complicated, and even the worst hacker in the world will be able to hack into your account if you are using such passwords. My advice is to take your time to devise some complicated password like, for example, “dg4j8z3m”. There are special programs out there that can generate passwords similar to the one I listed. Most of these programs can store these passwords in case you would forget them.
However, I recommend that you choose a password that you will be able remember easily due to the fact that each number and letter would stand for something important in your life. If such a password will be complicated enough, then strangers will never be able to guess it. Do not store this password on your computer; however, you may wish to write it down on a piece of paper.

Did Computer Games Beat Chess?

May 11th, 2010 Comments off

While there are still many people playing chess in the world, it is easy to notice that computer games are a lot more popular than chess. This happened for a variety of reasons, and I would like to discuss some of them:

-Computer games are more complicated. Many computer games have a whole world to explore, and when it comes to chess that is not the case. Of course, chess is complicated in a sense that it requires strategy, but it lacks a lot of elements that modern games have.
-Computer games are easier to play. You need to learn to play chess for a long time before it actually gives satisfaction. After all, it is not going to be fun it you are going to lose all the time. On the other hand, in most cases games are easier to play.
-Computer games encourage social interactions a lot more than chess. When you play chess, you play with only one other person, but computer games allow you to play with hundreds of other people all around the world.
-It is more fun to watch other people play computer games than to watch others play chess. Actually, watching other people play chess can be quite boring for the majority of people.

Head-Mounted Displays

April 29th, 2010 Comments off

Some time ago Apple has filled patent applications that describe improvements in head-mounted displays such as helmet or glasses. This sounds interesting because it may lead to iGlasses, a product that would contain two small display screens with magnifying lenses inside glasses. Apple has stated that this type of approach provides a wider field of view, which is desirable and additionally creates a more natural viewing situation for a user. Since Apple has products with very small video screens like iPods, this type of innovation could really benefit their product line. Time will tell when iGlasses will become a reality, but there are also some problems like, for example, the fact that such glasses could damage the wearers vision.
