Blind People and the Internet

April 28th, 2010 Comments off

Have you ever wondered how hard it must be to be blind, and not have easy accessibility to the Internet? However, it does not mean that blind people are unable to use the Internet at all. If they have enough motivation, they are going to find out how they can benefit from the Web. First of all, even blind person can learn to type. While it might not be easy, it can be done. Secondly, there are programs available on the Internet that can read aloud any text written on a website that a person is currently visiting. Obviously, a blind person will not be able to see the images placed on a website, but he will be able to get familiar with a websites content. This technology is still in development, and I expect that in the coming years, we will see it getting constantly improved. Blind Internet users should be able to access the Internet, as it is a valuable source of information, fun, and entertainment. They also deserve to choose surfing the Web as their hobby just like any other person. While there are still some tasks that blind people cannot perform on the Internet yet, I strongly believe that they will gradually become possible.

Using the Same Program Every Day?

April 28th, 2010 Comments off

There are many situations when it is a good idea to run certain programs at start-up. For example, many Internet users browse the Web on a daily basis, which means that it would be a good idea for them to set their browser to start automatically at start-up. This would eliminate the need to do this manually each time, and as a result it could save a lot of time. On the other hand, other people may always be working with Photoshop, Office, or Flash MX, and it might be a good idea for them to automatically run these programs at start-up each day. All you really have to do to in order to run programs at start-up is to put a shortcut to a desired program into the startup folder: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (username is your Windows logon name). You can make a shortcut to programs by right-clicking on them and selecting Create Shortcut. Of course, this is only a good idea if you plan to use these programs on a daily basis. Take into account that having too many programs running at the same time can slow down your computer, as each programs requires RAM.

Extensions

April 28th, 2010 Comments off

Every time you save a file, your computer will add an extension to it. Very often, it will ask you with what the extension you would like to save it as. It is important to know at least a few basic types of file extensions, as choosing the right one to save your file with is important. That is because it will inform your computer with what program to open it next time you will want to edit it. Let me here give you a few most basic and common extensions: .doc is a MS Word file, .xls is a MS Excel file, .pub is a MS Publisher file, and .ppt is a MS PowerPoint file. Among the programs used on the Internet, here are some of the most common used ones: .mp3 is a sound or music file, .pdf is a portable document file, .mpg is a movie or animation, .png is photograph or image, .jpg is also a photograph or image, .gif is a graphic or animation and finally .htm is a web page file.

As I said, it is important for you to know at least a few basic extensions in order to be able to save your documents in the correct format. Even if you use the wrong type of extension to save you file, probably nothing that bad will happen, but you may have problems opening the file in the future. You may also forget what data this file contained in the first place. It is better to be careful about that.

Maps on the Internet

April 20th, 2010 Comments off

Looking on maps on the Internet like, for example, Google Earth are a great way to study geography, check your directions before driving, or to simply look at your neighborhood to see how it looks like from a very far distance. I have always loved maps and found them to be very entertaining to look at. I know that a lot of people feel the same, and would spend hours looking at their neighborhood on Google Earth. Some of them would be hoping to find a better place to go on walks, or maybe finding a shorter way to drive to the supermarket. It can be very addictive to become a user of online maps, because they do not cost anything and are very practical. It is also fun to visit famous places in the world, such as Paris, Rome, London, or Moscow. Try to do it yourself, especially if you have never tried it yet. I am sure that you will discover that you love it. Google Earth is not the only map on the Internet that shows the pictures taken from a satellite. There is also NASA Terra, MapQuest, and surely many more. However, Google Maps are the most popular and are probably going to be for some time.

Inexpensive Way of Distributing Content

April 15th, 2010 Comments off

Let us say that you are a video enthusiast who likes creating video for the fun of it. You would also like many people to see your videos. What if you are a poet or writer who likes to write after he comes from work? It may not be easy to publish a book, but you would probably like other people to see what you have written. What can you do in such a situation? An inexpensive way to distribute content is through torrents. Torrents are a relatively new way of sharing files and they already being used regularly by millions of Internet users. Sharing files with torrents is so easy, because you use your own bandwidth to distribute the files. The bandwidth of anyone else who is downloading is also being utilized, so this way you do not have to pay for hosting your files. Using torrents does not cost any money and there are many torrent clients that perform their job very well. Files downloaded using torrents are very rarely corrupted, a lot less often compared to traditional ftp downloads. It is also possible to resume downloading files, so you do not have to download a file during one session. All of these advantages are the reason why torrents are so popular.

Blocked From Spidering

April 13th, 2010 Comments off

It seems that some websites are blocking search engines from spidering some parts of their sites. This includes website like Craiglist and Del.icio.us.

Last year, for example, many SEO websites were reporting that Yahoo has blocked other search engines from accessing certain links on Del.icio.us. What did it mean to an average Internet user? I do not think it really had such an impact, although it might have been a problem for webmasters who were receiving many backlinks from Del.icio.us in hopes to improve their site rankings. Those of us who had many incoming links from Del.icio.us might have noticed less links being indexed by Google. Since PageRank is determined by the number and quality of links, having less links might have even resulted in Page Rank dropping on some of the websites.

This situation only proved that our marketing and promotion strategy should be diversified. It should include many different websites from which we hope to receive links from. If you advertise using many different methods, then you reduce the chance of anything going wrong. After all, there is very small probability that all of your marketing methods will stop working at the same time.

Avoiding Viruses

April 13th, 2010 Comments off

These days you have to be very careful while being connected to the Internet. If you are not paying attention, it is easy to get your computer infected with viruses or spyware. Viruses can be very dangerous to our computer and our operating system. The worst thing about them is that often you might not even realize that your computer is infected. However, even if you know you have viruses on your computer, it is not always easy to remove them. There are some steps that you can take to prevent being infected in the first place:

-Never open emails that look suspicious. Even if they look like they were sent by somebody that may know you. Be careful when dealing with attachments.
-Avoid downloading a lot of files from the Internet before first verifying that you are dealing with a trusted site. Try downloading files from reputable websites.
-Install an antivirus program on your PC. Always remember to have the latest, the most update version of it. Update your antivirus program on a regular basis. Most antivirus programs will allow you to keep them updated automatically.
-Back up any of your important data on a regular basis. If a virus infects your PC and corrupts any important files, you will have a second copy of them.

When it comes to viruses, there is no reason to panic. I suggest taking some precautions like the ones I mentioned, and hopefully everything will be fine.

Protecting Yourself From Online Fraud

April 13th, 2010 Comments off

Making transaction on the Internet is nothing new, and that is why scammers know of many different ways to cheat people out of their money. There are some ways to protect yourself from scammers, but you should never buy anything from someone you do not trust. Here are some things that you may want to do:

-Buy from established auctions like eBay, and only from people who have a lot of positive feedback. Most of them would not be willing to lose their reputation in order to scam somebody. On the other hand, users with no feedback have almost nothing to lose, and might be even creating new accounts for the sole purpose of scamming. Beware of anyone that has a lot of negative feedback.
-Do not use eGold or similar types of payments, but rather use PayPal that usually offers protection for the buyer. Sites like eGold offer no protection whatsoever, so scammers will be often using such forms of payment. There have been thousands of people being scammed just because they agreed to transfer money to an eGold account.
-Do not buy anything really expensive from someone who does not have a good reputation. There is always a risk when it comes to expensive items. If you buy something that costs only a few dollars, then you will probably not get scammed.

As long as you adhere to the guidelines above, you should not have that many problems. The most important rule is to not trust everyone on the Internet.

Age of Conan

April 9th, 2010 Comments off

Age of Conan is a computer game that offers multiplayer gameplay with people all over the world. The game was released in 2008 so the game is still quite new, as it was not released that long ago. The question what I want to ask is whether the game is such a massive hit, as the fans expected it to be. Those who are familiar with the Massive Multiplayer Online Game universe know that there has not been a lot of innovation recently in online games. One of the main reasons for lack of innovations was World of Warcraft which achieved a financial success, sold millions of copies, and unfortunately, influenced the market to make clones of WoW. I do not find Age of Conan very innovative either, but I have to give it credit for gaining PvP levels, high quality graphics, adult universe, guild cities and siege fights. Those are the qualities which make this game unique, and in these regards it is different than World of Warcraft. It is a quite successful game, but it did not achieve a financial success as some thought it would. As a matter of fact, the CEO of the company sold most of his shares of stock, which proves that he was worried about the financial situation. Later on, the Producer and Game Director Gaute Godager resigned from his post.
