Cleaning Your Computer

January 26th, 2014 Comments off

Your computer is another device that needs cleaning from time to time. Remember to clean it on a regular basis to prevent any possible damage that might occur. Let me share with you some tips how to clean your PC:

-Before you clean your PC, you should always turn it off first. Make sure that all of the cables and connectors are removed from the back side of the computer case. This will ensure that cleaning your PC will be efficient and safe.
-Compressed air is very useful while cleaning a PC. Use it on your hardware maintaining a proper distance from a device. You can use it inside the computer case, on your keyboard, or on the back side of your computer case.
-When it comes to cleaning the computer case, I suggest using a slightly wet cloth and later cleaning it again with paper towel. Remember not to use too much water, especially when cleaning inside the computer case.
-If you eat near your computer like many people do, remember to clean your keyboard regularly before it looks too bad. If you notice your keyboard is getting dirty very often you might consider buying a rubber keyboard that can be submerged into water.

Magnetic Form of 3D Designs

January 26th, 2014 Comments off

Scientists are working on a system which could allow people to feel shapes and objects of 3D designs on computers. This is supposed to be achieved without any inconvenient mechanical gear. The research took place in Carnegie Mellon University, and it was announced that the system would be based on a touch-based interface, without using any gloves or force feedback. This device is going to provide the most realistic sense of touch of any haptic interface in the world today. Users will move a control handle while optical sensors measure the position and orientation of the device in relation to objects displayed on the user PC, while electrical coils inside the device receive signals and interact with magnets, causing the unit to levitate. While the description of the device might seem a bit complicated, I think that it has really great potential. This device sounds like it might be very useful, but additionally I think that it also sounds like a lot of fun. Such 3D designs could be used for games, various programs, or even for education purposes. While this technology is not exactly as sophisticated as the holodec from Star Trek, it is certainly a step in the right direction.

Video Streaming

January 26th, 2014 Comments off

There are millions of blogs out there. While bloggers communicate with their readers with written language, I am wondering how attractive it would be for readers to view videos of bloggers speaking on various subjects. Qik Video Streaming allows streaming videos from mobile phones, and such content could appear on blogs or related sites like Facebook. I am pretty sure that video streaming blogs will not replace traditional blogs. On the other hand, I am also pretty sure that some bloggers will want to integrate video streaming to some degree. Qik Video Streaming has a latency of around 1-2 seconds, so it is pretty efficient. Time will tell how popular it will become. While it may not become very popular within a year or two, I think that video streaming will gain on popularity when fast broadband connections will be even more accessible. Many Internet users have download limits set by their Internet service providers so they cannot download as much data as they would like. However, this is also likely to change and this is one of the reasons why video streaming might gain on popularity in the future. Of course, it does not mean that regular blogs will disappear.

Images and WordPress

January 18th, 2014 Comments off

If you are a blogger having a WordPress blog, you may want to insert a picture in your post from time to time. You might want to do that in order to make your blog more attractive to visitors. It might happen that some of your friends will send you an image that they will ask you to post on your blog. However, sometimes you might be surprised that the image is so big that it does not fit very well in your post. You should remember that you can always resize an image. To do so, go to your draft and left click on this picture once. You will see that it is surrounded by black frame with a few black dots. Move your cursor on one of those dots and wait until your cursor changes into double headed arrow. If it does, then hold left mouse button and drag it in order to make it smaller. Integrating images is a great idea, but try to remember not to make them too big. Another important thing that you should remember is to make sure your blog loads within a few seconds. In other words, do not upload too many images, or those visitors that use dial-up will have a hard time browsing your site. Images can make your blog look better, but you also have to take into account the loading time of your blog. There are some websites on the Internet that can help you measure that.

Should You Choose LCD over CRT?

January 15th, 2014 Comments off

Most computer users these days have a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitor, and they prefer it over any type of traditional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor. If you still have a CTR monitor, then perhaps you should consider replacing it. Here are some reasons why that might be a good idea:

The price of LCD monitors is falling all the time, and even though LCDs might still be more expensive than CRTs, the price difference is not that big. There are many palces where you can buy an inexpensive LCD monitor.
LCD monitors take a lot less space than traditional ones. This is an important point for anyone who does not have a lot of space on his desk. Carrying a LCD monitor is a lot easier.
There is generally a better image quality on an LCD monitor. That is because it uses more advanced technology. The future definitely belongs to LCD monitors.
LCDs consume less energy and are more efficient. This could save you a lot of money if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer.
CTR monitors can cause eye-strain due to their flicker rate. You will not suffer from the same problem using an LCD monitor. Because of this it is possible to spend more hours in front of a LCD without being tired.
The response time of an LCD monitor is a lot faster than that of a CRT which is very important if you are a gamer or watch movies.

Multitasking

January 15th, 2014 Comments off

In today’s world we are being encouraged to multitask. When you drive a car, you might be required to talk to your children or on the phone, eat while watching the news etc. While multitasking can be tiring, it can actually be a lot of fun. It allows you to do at least two things at the time, and thus use your time more effectively. There are many activities which can be combined together like, for example, eating and watching TV. Why would you just look at your food, if you can watch news at the same time? Additionally, many doctors argue that talking with full mouth is not healthy, and thus it is not the best idea to talk with family members while eating a meal. Many children and teenagers do their homework and watch TV simultaneously. This might be more difficult, so I would not recommend it in most situations. However, if someone can focus on doing his homework while listening to music or watching TV, then there is nothing wrong about that. I know that many people dislike multitasking, but in many situations it is beneficial. In my opinion, you do not have to worry about multitasking as long as you use your time more effectively this way. Some people can concentrate on a lot of different things at the same time. However, if multitasking is making you tired, then you should consider doing just one thing at a time.

Blogs Limited to One Topic?

December 19th, 2013 Comments off

What are the best topics to blog about? There are thousands possible topics that a blog can have, and it is going to be up to you to choose the one you are the most interested in. You may get an idea to blog about search engine optimization, or maybe you also got a few other ideas not directly related to this particular subject. There is a chance that there are a few other things you are fascinated about that you would like to write about. Are you worried about starting a blog that would cover more than one topic? I think that there is nothing wrong about blogging about two or three different topics on your blog. After all, there have to be people who also share your interests. While staying focused on the topic of a blog is a very important factor in retaining visitors, writing about a few topics might even attract more readers that will come to a blog in order to read about a variety of topics. Of course, there has to be moderation in everything, so it may not be a good idea to blog about a dozen unrelated subjects. That is because there may not be that many visitors that have interest in all of the topics you would discuss. On the other hand, if you are going to discuss two or three topics, then your blog will be very attractive to all of those people that have an interest in those topics.

Know What You Are Reading

September 4th, 2013 Comments off

Almost everybody who watches Jon Stewart from the Daily Show knows that you cannot believe everything he is saying, because his program is a so-called fake news show. However, things are different on the Internet. With so many new websites being created, you might not realize that what you are reading is not true. There are many hoax websites on the Internet with the goal of misleading their readers. Some of them are more misleading than others. Let us look, for example, at MoonBeam Enterprise, which advertises as an ultimate place to buy your property on the Moon. Probably, you would not fall for it, but you will be surprised to find out how many people actually fell for this hoax. My advice is, whatever you read or watch on the Net, be prepared for misleading websites and scammers.

It is so easy to get scammed these days. For example, you might have received a scam email like this: Congratulations! You are the 1,000,000th 1-800-Mail visitor! YOU WON $400! Recently, we have reached 120,000 members. 1-800-Mail has over 4,000,000 visits monthly, so we decided to give cash prizes every 1,000,000th visitor every month. This month, you are the one of 4 winners who will get $400 from 1-800-Mail!

When you click on the link, you will be redirected to a website which looks like 1-800-Mail, but apparently has a different domain address. After I visited the site, you might be asked for your PayPal email address to claim the reward. You have to realize that the email could be used to spam you in the future, and that they would not pay you anything. Watch out for such type of scams, because some are more dangerous than others. You can benefit a lot from using the Internet, but you should also be aware of potential dangers.

Monopoly in The Technology Market

May 14th, 2013 Comments off

One of the things that economists dislike are monopolies. I think it is safe to say that the public also dislikes them, because whenever we have contact with monopolies it is the consumer that suffers the most. This is often due to the fact that we have to pay a higher price, or simply the quality of goods and services are lower. When it comes to the technology market, it seems that Microsoft and Google are in many ways monopolists. What consequences does that have to an average Internet user? I believe that it does not benefit us, because there is not enough competition in the market. If this trend is going to continue, then soon there will be even less companies to compete with Microsoft or Google.

A prime example of the monopoly of Google is Pagerank. Pagerank has become very important for many webmasters in the blogosphere, and even if this is only the opinion of Google about your website, this does not change the fact that bloggers are still interested in it. This is because Google is a monopolist, and Internet users are starting to realize what the disadvantages are of a company being a monopolist. Fortunately, there are some counter measures being taken like the introduction of other ranking systems like RealRank, a ranking system that actually tracks the visitors to your site and ranks it accordingly. On the other hand, PR updates only once every few months, and it is very hard to know whether your PR will get higher or drop.

What I wanted to say in this post is that there are advantages of having more than just one or two companies that basically control the Internet, or in this particular case, control the only popular website ranking system.

Spam Comments

April 13th, 2013 Comments off

CAPTCHA is very often used as a method to reduce the number of spam comments on websites. It is a way to verify that the person who leaves a comment is real, and is not an automated script. For those who do not know, CAPTCHA is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether the user is human. “CAPTCHA” is an acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”, and it is often incorporated it in a way that visitors have to type the letters of a distorted image. Most spam comments are posted by bots or programs which are specifically designed for spamming. They automatically visit sites on the Internet to look for places where it is possible to submit comments. They do this in order to post unwanted advertisements of websites or services. One of the best ways to stop these bots is to use the CAPTCHA system which requires the visitor to write down the letters that he sees. Since computer programs do not know how to analyze images, only humans will be able to decipher the letters. While some CAPTCHAs have been broken like phpBBs, it is still a very good method to avoid scripts spamming forums or other websites. A lot of sites are recently adding the CAPTCHA verification system. I think that this will not make them necessarily less enjoyable to visit, but will rather prevent spammers and hackers. However, when using CAPTCHA it is important to make it readable to for average person. After all, we want to stop bots from visiting our site, not our loyal visitors.
